The Gospel of John, chapter 4:13

All of us know what it is to be thirsty. We also know what happens to all living things when deprived of moisture. Plants shrivel, wither and die. The earth suffocates, returns to dust, and is carried away on the winds. Human beings quickly waste away and ultimately perish without water.

But, our thirst is for more than water. We thirst for wisdom and understanding; we thirst for love: love of God and love of mankind. This thirst can only be quenched by the word of God.

Today’s scripture focuses our attention on the spiritual thirst from within. We recognize Jesus as the deep well of spiritual life that never fails to satisfy. We can savor this delicious drink from the fountain of eternal life-Jesus, whenever we sip of His living word that satisfies our thirst from within.

Today’s scripture invites us to strengthen our faith by experiencing Christ in His word. We can also experience Him in His sacraments; and in the gathered community of our Christian brothers and sisters. “Wherever two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I among them”, He says.

What are you thirsting for? Who will help you quench that thirst? Take time to satisfy your thirst each day, by getting in touch with Christ: the Living Word; by drinking of the “fountain” from within that provides “eternal life.”

Remember the beatitude: “Blessed are those who thirst for holiness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
