Gospel of Luke, chapter 11:26
Some people who have given up drink, cigarettes, drugs, and unbridled sex, often consider it a problem over and done with. But then comes an unexpected pressure that upsets their peace of mind and tempts them to reach out for that drink, or smoke, or drug or sex. And, when they do, the old habit or habits return with a vengeance; harder to shake off than it was the first time. Jesus warns us of this possibility with regards to our discarded habits of sin.
“When an unclean spirit has gone out of a man,” Jesus says, “it wanders through arid wastes, searching for a resting place. Failing to find one, it says, ‘I will go back where I came from.’ It then returns to find the house swept and tidied…The result is that the last state of the man will be worse than the first.” (Like 11:24-26)
This is a frightening lesson and you should never forget it. When old temptations try to undermine you, and you can expect them to try, just remember this lesson. Change your thoughts from the temptations to the good news of Jesus, and off will go scurrying the old devil with his seven new ones. Temptations never abandon us. They are always there. The important thing is not to give into them. Give into the good news of the Gospel for it offers a much better deal which is eternal life.
Christians must learn to live in a supportive environment where old temptations are not allowed to roam; and where the same old sins won’t have much chance of moving back into their lives. Be grateful for the company you keep if it is good and wholesome company. Avoid bad company and the occasions of sin lest the last state will turn out to be worse than the first. Pray without ceasing to you heavenly Father, and you’re Father in heaven will deliver you from evil.
