Gospel of John, chapter 6:35

Today’s scripture is perfect for the doldrum days of summer. It reminds us that God has great riches to share with us and that we have great riches to share with each other. The reason Jesus fed the multitude (Matthew 14/13-21) was to give us an example – an example of sharing that doesn’t just come naturally. We have a tendency to hoard our treasure, not spread it around. That is the way of the world; to hoard rather than share. Take time today to look at the treasure you have on deposit and ask yourself what kind of interest you are making on it? Draw on your stockpile of riches and spread them around. That’s what God does; that’s what Jesus did; and that’s what every good Christian does daily. Don’t be afraid to pile up this kind of treasure. You won’t be the poorer for it. That’s a promise from Jesus Himself.

As faithful followers of Jesus, our job is to recognize how incredibly rich we really are, to dip into our riches and to share them with others.

God’s bountifulness is very evident in the Eucharist. There, the grand story of our salvation and divine love is renewed. In the Eucharist, “the love of God…..comes to us in Christ Jesus,” there; more than anywhere else, is reason for thanksgiving and gratitude. Jesus is our bread of life; He is our spiritual food that lasts forever. He wants us to share this food of kindness, and generosity with one another.
