Gospel of Matthew, chapter 5:3

One day a rich man took his young son on a trip to the country to show him how poor people live. They spent a day and a night on the farm of a poor family. When they got back from their trip the father asked his son: “How was the trip?”

“Very good, Dad!” replied the son.
“Did you see how poor people live?” the father asked.
“Yeah!”
“And what did you learn?”

The son answered:
“I saw that we have one dog at home, but the poor family has four.
We have a pool that reaches to the middle of the garden; the poor family has a creek that has no end.
We have artificial lights in the garden; the poor family lives by the light of the stars.

Our patio reaches to the front yard; but the poor family has a whole horizon.
I am an only son; but the poor family has brothers and sisters to play with.”

When the little boy was finished, his father was speechless.

His son added: “Thanks, Dad, for showing me how much we are lacking.”

Isn’t it true that it all depends on the way you look at things? If you have love, friends, family, health, good humor and a positive attitude toward life, you’ve got everything!

The best things in life are free; they are free gifts from Almighty God.

You can’t buy any of these gifts of God. You can have all the material possessions you can imagine: possessions; a fine house or mansion; a fancy car; a yacht; a private airplane; and a membership at a golf club.

But, if you are not poor in spirit you have nothing. If you are not grateful enough to recognize that these material possessions are only passing attractions and that the best things in life are free gifts from God; you are delusional.

“Blessed are the poor in spirit.”
