Most Christians are familiar with the catchy phrase: ‘to be in the world, but not of it.’  This radical teaching is derived mainly from John 17 where Jesus prays for His followers who will have to engage fully with the world while remaining faithful to His other-worldly teachings. The Apostle Paul reiterates this same message in Romans 12:2 when he declares: “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind.”

At first glance, the idea of being in the world but not of it may seem contradictory or even impossible. How can one fully engage with the world while simultaneously rejecting its values and norms? The answer lies in the example set by Jesus Himself. Throughout His ministry, Jesus immersed Himself in the lives of those around Him, traveling from place to place and interacting with people from all walks of life. Yet, He never compromised His message or His mission. As followers of Christ, we are called to emulate this approach, actively participating in the world while remaining steadfast in our faith.

One might question why the Lord would ask us to live in a world that often stands in opposition to His teachings. The answer is simple: we are called to be agents of change and beacons of hope in the world. By engaging with the world, we have the opportunity to share the Gospel message and make a positive impact on those around us. We were born into this world for a purpose, and through our actions and words, we can help to create a better world by following the example of Jesus.

While we are encouraged to engage with the world, we must also remain vigilant in maintaining our spiritual integrity. In an age of rapid technological advancement and instant gratification, it is all too easy to fall prey to the false promises and values of the world, such as unbridled materialism, sexual license, and the pursuit of fleeting pleasures. As Christians, we must strive to maintain a delicate balance, participating in the world while resisting its temptations.

Despite its challenges, the world is ultimately a gift from God, filled with wonders and opportunities for growth. Through right reason, we appreciate the many positive aspects of the world, such as scientific discoveries, artistic expression, and the beauty of human relationships. By engaging with the world while remaining grounded in our faith, we can make a positive difference in the lives of others.

Embracing the message of Jesus is not an easy path for it demands much of us. However, it is ultimately the most rewarding journey we can undertake. By staying true to His teachings, we can emerge from the trials and tribulations of life renewed and transformed like the Prodigal Son who found redemption after straying from the path. While many may reject this message, those who accept it will find a source of joy and strength that can withstand the challenges of the world.

As so, as Christians, we are called to navigate the complexities of being in the world but not of it. By following the example of Jesus and holding fast to His teachings, we can engage with the world in a meaningful way while maintaining our spiritual integrity. Though the path may be difficult at times, the rewards of a life lived in service to the Truth (His Word) are immeasurable.

As we journey through this world, let us embrace the gifts it offers while always keeping our hearts and minds fixed on the eternal truths of our faith.
