Everybody wants to be happy, but few know where to find it. In the following simple prose poem, John Burroughs finds happiness in the beauty which lies before us…
The lesson which life
constantly repeats
is to ‘look under foot.’
You are always nearer
to the divine and
the true sources of
your power than you think.
The lure of the distant
and the difficult
is deceptive.
The great opportunity
is where you are.
Do not despise
your own place and hour.
Every place is
under the stars.
Every place is
the center of the world.

I’m so happy to hear how much today’s simple message meant to you, Maureen. All you need to be happy is right there where you are in abundance.

Fr. Duffy, what a beautiful poem to illustrate the essence of happiness that everyone needs including myself. I kept telling people not to allow their happiness be mortgaged by anyone.
Jesus said it in the Bible, be happy always, what I want from you is your happiness( Phil 4:4-7)
Thanks for your wkly catechesis on a variety of exegesis!
Remain blessed.
